THE HOME THAT UNDERGIRDS LIFE Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. Eph. 6:2, 3. What makes the present home situation difficult is loss of respect and love, failure to honor the parents and each member of the family. The prevalence of divorce and the betrayal of children are the dire consequences. There are few issues today that seem more vital to us all. God offers us the turning of the "heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers" (Mal. 4:6). Our Lord is big enough and loving enough to cope with all the home problems. It is almost impossible to overstate the vital necessity of a truly Christian home. Whether we participate in the final triumph of the church of God will depend to a great extent on the condition of our homes. What an indestructible and indispensable value is the home that asserts the supremacy of Christ's morality, never letting that go, regardless of what happens elsewhere. One consistent Christian home, holding out for what God originally had in mind when He created us, is of untold worth to the church, the school, and to all society where life is no longer thought of as cheap, where family members discover the inspiration and limitless possibilities of a love that is master over all the sinful forces in the world. A Christian home is not a luxury, it is a necessity. It is a home that issues a challenge to our conscience to be true to each other, that nourishes a righteous love in our hearts, and shines like a light set on a hill. We need to make Christ the head of the household where members enjoy the presence of the divine. All the hurry, strife, and struggle that is met outside may be countered by the stability of a Christian home. After venturing out, we return home each day to enrich ourselves emotionally, morally, and spiritually. When a young person turns his back on a home where shines the light of love, the love of God slowly dies within him. The Christian home does something for us that nothing else can do. It meets our basic needs. It satisfies us. |
